Spend a Day in Salzburg

A few weeks ago I was advised to spend a second weekend in Vienna as opposed to Salzburg, a smaller city about three hours west–  most recognized as the birthplace of Mozart and filming location for the famous Sound of Music film. While I tend to prioritize nightlife and the feasibility of transport when traveling, Salzburg’s streets are prone to make visitors fall in love with its lustful hills and vibrant colors, making a one-day farewell a bit of a heartbreak. While I technically arrived the night before, I only had one full day of sightseeing. Instead of one day, I’d make it two, but for those only able to see Salzburg as a day trip, here are the things (I did) that you shouldn’t miss.

1.) Discover the Life of Mozart

In 1756, Mozart was born at appartment No. 9 Getreidegasse.

There are several museums across the city that offer a glimpse into the life of famous music composer, Wolfgang Mozart, but for the most authentic experience, both his birthplace and residence buildings remain standing. And yes, his birthplace is now a supermarket, so don’t feel crazy if you’re trying to figure out why people are taking photos of the local Spar.

No. 8 Makartplatz. Mozart moved into this resdience in 1773.

2.) Go on a Sound of Music Scavenger Hunt

Residenzplatz, situated in the Old Town, is apparently one of the many filming locations.

I must admit, I’ve never seen the film. I have no idea what it is about or why it’s famous, so I felt a bit unappreciative when friends told me Salzburg is a must-see city in Europe because of the film. For actual fans of the movie, you’re in luck! The whole city has locations that are easily recognizable to everyone except me, such as Residenzplatz, Salzburg’s Old Town, and Mirabell Palace (which is already on the list). The city is so cliche-ingly beautiful, I felt like I was in the movie, despite not watching it.

3.) Admire the Hohensalzburg Fortress (from below)

Hohensalzburg Fortress. I don’t hike 😜

I say ‘admire’ because a hike to the top, especially if you didn’t bother to book accommodation for the night, is a bit too sweaty for my liking. The fortress can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, but with a two-minute walk past the Cathedral, you can get a clear view that is good enough for those who want a picture without putting in the effort.

4.) Visit the Mirabell Palace and Gardens

Mirabell Palace. Surprisingly, it wasn’t too packed for a Saturday.

What is now probably one of the most romantic wedding locations in Europe, if not Earth, the Mirabell Palace, and its Baroque-style gardens, define the regality that is Salzburg. In Spring, the flowers of the garden are in full bloom, making it the perfect place to snap a few photos.

5.) Sunbathe Along the Salzach River

Summer vibes

I caught Salzburg on an exceptionally warm day, and the return of the sun and (hopefully) early summer brought locals in the water. If you’re lucky enough to visit Austria in the summer months, a dip into the river, which conveniently runs throughout the city, is a great way to spend a sunny afternoon.

6.) Enjoy a Riverside Meal

Monkeys cafe.bar.

If you’re not to keen on swimming, there are tons of restaurants and bars situated on the river that give guests a pleasant and up-close view. I was a bit lazy, so I sampled a Stiegl, Austria’s most popular beer, at Monkeys cafe.bar. I’d assume weekends get pretty busy, but I went mid-afternoon on a Saturday and still managed to get a table for myself outside.

More photos if you’re not yet convinced…

The hills make the town.
