My introduction to Austria could not have been more enchanting. I stumbled upon Feldkirch by mere luck– my job located me here for a week, and wow, what an impression! I’ve never wanted to visit Austria, but the train ride from Zurich reassured me that Austria would soon mark its position as one of Europe’s most beautiful countries.

Admittedly, there isn’t much going on in Feldkirch. Situated on the border of Switzerland, this humble little town is no more than a location to quickly pass through for a day. Here there are 5 things to see in Feldkirch before continuing to your next destination.

1.) Liechtenstein

The first thing on the list is to visit another country. I guess that’s how you know not shit is happening here, but many Austrians live here, as it’s only a thirty-minute bus ride away. Also, Liechtenstein is expensive, so if you’re keen on visiting one of the smallest countries in Europe, basing yourself in Feldkirch seems to be the most sensible option.

2.) Feldkirch Wildpark

Austria is pleasant enough that you’ll want to take a break from bar hopping and enjoy its natural surroundings. On a mountain atop Feldkirch’s outskirts, you’ll find the Feldkirch Wildpark. Wolves, deer, and other wild animals, this park is free, making it the perfect lazy afternoon trip.

3.) Schattenburg Castle

Covered in pine, this castle was constructed in the 1200s and has been there since. It is also a restaurant and a museum. A view of the city is worth the uphill walk.

4.) Katzenturm (Cat Tower)

This is the tallest tower in town. I don’t know what else to add.

5.) The Old Town

Restaurants, cafes, bars, and everything you need is here. You’ll definitely spend all of your time here, as there is nothing else to do in Feldkirch, but it’s cute. I went out here Friday night and it gave major ‘townie’ vibes, but Austrians are genuinely friendly and will probably be shocked as to why you’re visiting such a small town, awarding you lots of attention.

You do not need longer than a day in Feldkirch– you don’t even need to spend the night because everything you need to see can be seen in one day. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to visit Lake Constance, but the many beautiful lakes that span across Austria will absolutely reroute my journey back to this beautiful country!
